Sun, surf, pigment? There is a lot to love about summer, but not everyone loves the pigmentation in the form of extra brown spots!
So why does it always seem to flare up over summer and what can you do if you don’t like it?
Our Dermal Therapist Alicia Green is here to help!
What causes pigmentation?
Pigmentation occurs when your melanin (melanin is what gives your skin its colour, the more melanin you have the darker your skin) deposits pigment in the visible layer of the skin, usually in uneven blotches.
Pigmentation can be triggered by various different causes such as your genes, hormones (especially in pregnancy), stress, medications and damage to the skin from trauma. The largest and most preventable factor is sun exposure.
Increased melanin production is stimulated by the sun and a tan is the skins way of trying to shade and protect its deeper layers from dangerous cancer-causing UV rays. That’s why the experts say there is no such thing as a healthy tan!
But I stay out of the sun and I still get pigmentation.. why?
The annoying thing is that once you have had pigmentation, your skin is almost ‘trained’ to keep producing melanin and even small amounts of sun or even just being very hot can trigger this response.
Is there a part of the body or face that is more prone to pigmentation?
Any area of the body where you have had prolonged sun exposure without sun protection can cause pigmentation. Your face, neck and décolletage are extremely prone to pigmentation.
How do I stop my pigmentation from getting worse?
STEP 1: Prevention is key!
Sun protection is a non-negotiable. Even though many don’t like the smell or how greasy sunscreens are there is no excuse for not keeping your skin protected with a good quality sunscreen to stop pigmentation forming in the first place. Even if you are someone who tans easily, most of us are not engineered to withstand the strong Australian sun without experiencing ageing effects such as wrinkles and pigmentation, as well as life threatening skin cancers.
Putting on a 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and reapply twice hourly if outside for a long period of time. Adding a wide brimmed hat, protective clothing and sunglasses are also really helpful. Yes, it is the boring stuff, but it’s true!
WHAT WE LOVE: Drytouch SPF50+ $28 – We love Aspect Envirostat SPF dry touch and this is the sunscreen we apply in the clinic to our clients after treatments.
STEP 2: Skin Care
There are many effective and proven skin care products with ingredients that help to prevent, lighten and suppress pigmentation production.
There are several ingredients that work on several levels to improve pigmentation such as antioxidants to fight free radicals, vitamin A to help even out skin tone as well as peptides and liquorice root extract for skin brightening.
WHAT WE LOVE
Our top pigmentation products are:
- Cosmedix Elite Pepoxide serum $136 – Revitalizes the skin with peptide amino acids and antioxidants for a more youthful glow. Inhibits production of melanin to prevent pigmentation.
- Cosmedix Elite X-Cell+ serum $136 – An exceptional skin brightening serum. LG-Retinex complex (vitamin A) with powerful antioxidants reveal a lighter, brighter more evenly toned skin.
STEP 3: In clinic treatments
Treatment for pigmentation can range from in clinic chemical peels to laser treatment. As a general rule we prefer to treat pigmentation in the cooler months of the year due to increased sun exposure through summer. You can often make it faster than we can help you get rid of it!
